With Amira

I was introduced to Amira in Cairo by someone who I had never met earlier. Compared to my overseas travels about a decade ago, modern technology is helping me have more unique and rich experience.

In an environment where I knew little about how things work, she was my gateway to understanding the values and custom of the Egyptians. She was like a mom to whom a baby, me, could ask anything about the world he sees – such as “what does this name mean?” or “why some women do or don’t wear hijab?” Especially when she took my hand and protected my life when we had to jaywalk avenues, I felt like an Egyptian son.

I happily gave up on visiting Aswan when I was asked to come to her friend’s wedding party in Cairo. I could experience tons of Egyptian dance, both traditional and modern in style. There I was given by her friends a funny and sweet nickname, Lenovo, due to the debatable similarity in sounds.
