Quiet nights
One thing I learned in Cyprus is that it can get really quiet at night. For sure, it depends on the season and the place, but I think Cyprus in winter is usually very quiet at night. In this particular neighborhood where I am staying in Larnaca, there is almost nothingness in terms of sound in the streets. Every other day around midnight, I come outside to workout at the front patio. The only thing I can hear is the noise made by my movements and my breathing. And I get conscious of my breathing as it disturbs the quietness in the street and it gets the attention of street cats.
As a nocturnal person, this experience has become a special ritual here. It is the most meditative workout session I’ve experienced. And I also enjoy the illusion that I am the only one awake in the world.
As I am visiting many places around the world these days, I think about the qualities of the place where I want to live in the future. Now I know that I prefer quiet places, at least during night time. It might just mean that I prefer uncrowded places, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the case.
