Cabo de Vidio, Asturias

Between the Vasco region and the Galicia region of Spain, I needed to drive through the Asturias region. When I realized this, I wanted to get to know the region at least for a couple hours although my itinerary was already quite tight.

The name Asturias is special to me, because it is also the name of the famous classical guitar piece composed by Isaac Albeniz of Spain. And that was why the name of the student guitar club at my undergraduate was also Asturias, where I spent several passionate years in my early 20s practicing the instrument. (I later learned that the song Asturias is actually more related to the Andalusian flamenco music than the folklore music of Asturias)

Where should I visit for only a couple hours to get a decent feel for the region? Upon some research, I concluded that ‘scenic nature’ is something that can well represent the Asturias region. So I came by the lighthouse at Cape Vidio, or Faro de Cabo Vidio.

However, unlike the peacefulness you might feel in the picture, something unfortunate happened when I got there – my phone broke and completely lost its cell signal and the navigation stopped. I was already at a remote place from big cities and I still had many hours of driving to get to Galicia by the evening. My mind was getting busy with many questions but I tried to stick with my ritual when I get to natural spots – to sit down, close eyes and try to remember the space with non-visual senses.
