A couple of days ago, I said goodbye to my car … for now!
I shipped the car in a large container along with the vehicles of fellow world travelers at the port in Montevideo, Uruguay. The ship carrying the container is expected to arrive in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in about a month, if everything goes as planned.
My travel started 10 days shy of a year ago. When I planned it, it was not going to end in the last destination in South America anyways – it was going to be around the world. But as I’m approaching my travel anniversary and as I’m preparing my farewell to the Americas, I needed to review why I am continuing this. I took take time to think about whether I am standing true to my initial motivations. Several other reasons aside, I realized that my curiosity alone could justify the continuation- I am still very willing to see other parts of the world with my own eyes.
Whether to keep traveling by car was another question I’d asked myself for the last several months. And at the end, I concluded there was no clear winning option, so I decided to take my friend with me a bit longer. Nationalizing or selling the car at the end of the trip is probably a big headache irrespective of the country. But I am postponing the headache for now.
This was the 2nd time I shipped the car. The first time was in Panama and it was hot then. Here in Montevideo, everything was managed very efficiently. My container-mates were sweet to share the experience with and were interesting travelers by themselves.
